1901, Pablo Picasso, Spanish Dancer -- Phillips Collection (Washington) (special exhibition)
From the special exhibition label: Spanish Dancer, which was exhibited as “El tango” in Picasso’s first Parisian show in the summer of 1901, depicts a theatrically costumed and made-up woman crouching under the harsh glare of electrical lights. The bright colours, broken brushwork, and spatially compressed composition show that Picasso was engaging with the work of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Edgar Degas. The influence of those two French artists can also be seen in the bold colours and dramatically cropped architectural environment in On Stage, a view of a performer in a music hall.
