1904, Pablo Picasso, Flowers -- Phillips Collection (Washington) (special exhibition)

From the special exhibition label: A drooping bouquet with yellowing leaves, limp stems, and wilting flowers threatens to tip over a dramatically lit vase. One of only four still lifes Picasso made during the second half of 1904, this representation of decaying matter is as disorienting and depressing as the impression created by the gaunt, threadbare subjects who populate the works on display in this gallery.
