1899, Everett Shinn, Broadway, Late in the Afternoon, After Matinee [pastel] -- Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (Richmond)
From the museum label:
Everett Shinn is known for taking special measures to catch the viewer's attention; in this pastel drawing, a woman at left meets our gaze and the foreground slush suggests diagonals leading us into picture plane. The fleeting atmospheric effects evoke the loose, painterly style of the French Impressionists, but the vernacular subject matter aligns Shinn with his fellow realists who would come to form the Ashcan School.
In capturing the bustle of the theatergoing crowd, Broadway, Late in the Afternoon proved to be a prophetic work. Shinn went on to produce several plays during the opening decades of the 20th century in a theater that he built adjacent to his home. In 1917 he began a career as an art director for several major motion picture houses.
