1894, Winslow Homer, The Watch, Eastern Shore, Prout's Neck [watercolor] -- Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (Richmond)

From the museum label: Here, a solitary Maine fisherman stands atop a rocky cliff dotted with small gnarled trees. The craggy promontory was likely inspired by the rocky coastline just a stone's throw from the artist's studio overlooking Saco Bay in Prout's Neck. Against the low perspective and emphatically rendered sky, the figure appears vulnerable, recalling Homer's experience in Cullercoats, a small fishing village in northeast England. The artist was profoundly stirred by the conditions there and the evidence of human struggle against the raw power of nature.
