1871, Eastman Johnson, The Hatch Family -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York)

From the museum label: Deemed by Johnson his best group portrait, this family tableau was commissioned by Alfrederick Hatch, a Wall Street broker and later the president of the New York Stock Exchange. Gathered in the library of their house on Park Avenue at 37th Street are Hatch and his wife, his father and her mother, and eleven Hatch children, ranging in age from sixteen-year-old John Ruggles, standing at the left, to the infant Emily, held in the lap of one sister. The wreath in a window denotes the Christmas season; overall, the painting evokes domestic values and the advantages enjoyed by affluent urbanites just after the Civil War.
