1670 (ca.), Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, The Vision of Saint Francis of Paola -- Getty Museum (Los Angeles)
From the museum label: Saint Francis of Paola (1416-1507) founded the Minims, a branch of the Franciscan order of monks known for their extreme humility. While experiencing a vision of the word charitas (charity), the order's symbol, the saint gestures to a miraculous event at left, in which he ferries himself and two companions to Sicily on his cloak after a ship has denied them passage. The size and subject of this painting suggest that it was an altarpiece for a Spanish Capuchin brotherhood, since the saint wears the brown robes of that order rather than the black cope of the Minims.
