1893, Edvard Munch, Starry Night -- Getty Museum (Los Angeles)

From the museum label: Starry Night presents a view from the Grand Hotel in Asgardstrand, a resort town south of Oslo, Norway. The artist radically simplified and stylized the scene, subordinating prosaic reality to a lyrical vision in which stars pulsate in the dusky sky and trees and seashore fuse together in a sinuous, flowing line. A looming shadow on the white fence, reminiscent of Munch's images of fatefully entwined lovers, introduces a note of psychic disturbance. Steeped in personal memories, Asgardstrand was the setting for the spiritual and sexual dramas that inspired many of the artist's career-defining works.
