1618 (ca.), Anthony van Dyck, The Apostle Simon -- Getty Museum (Los Angeles)
From the museum label: One of a series of paintings depicting Christ and the Twelve Apostles, this panel shows the disciple Simon with his left hand resting on a saw, the instrument of his martyrdom. The group was inspired by a similar series executed around 1610 by Peter Paul Rubens, Van Dyck's teacher. While these panels were among van Dyck's earliest works, the confident handling of paint and bold contrasts of light and shade bear witness to his precociousness.
