1905, André Derain, Portrait of Henri Matisse -- Philadelphia Museum of Art

From the museum label: Like an informal snapshot, this portrait study shows Matisse posing at the seashore. Appearing to have been wading in the ocean, his pants are rolled up above his ankles. He sits on a folding beach chair beside a table supporting a large red water pot recently bought on a visit to Spain. Using thick blended and unblended brushstrokes, Derain avoids defining each element of the composition, challenging the eye to decipher the motifs. He allows the viewer to savor fields of color: the brilliant yellow sand and various shades of dark and light blue.
