1940, Henri Matisse, Striped Robe, Fruit, and Anemones -- Baltimore Museum of Art
From the museum label: Produced in February 1940, this work is a wonderful example of the fluid paintings of Matisse's late period. The model, dressed in an elegantly striped robe, looks out directly at the viewer, seemingly unaware of the cacophony of colorful flowers and foliage that surrounds her. Here, Matisse invented a composition that is delicately balanced between realism and abstraction.
