1888 (ca.), Childe Hassam, Rue Montmartre -- Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (Richmond)

From the museum label: A young flower seller leans against a pale stone wall. Her head is tilted away from us, directing our eye along a bend in the street. The path winds its way from the basket of vibrant red geraniums toward a complementary pop of red lurking in a blue-framed window box. The deep perspective and balanced elements reflect Hassam's taste for academic rationalism. Yet the artist also moves beyond these conventions. Injected into the natural variations of the stone wall and cobbled street are broad washes of pink and blue. Hassam's experimental brush is further apparent in the blatant slashes of orchestrated color that form the cluster of trees. The effect is symptomatic of the artist's syncretic style.
