1905, Henri Matisse, Still Life with Vegetables -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York)
From the museum label: In this still life, Matisse gathers zucchini, red and green peppers, tomatoes, an onion, and a carrot, along with local pottery. He renders these objects in flat planes of color, experimenting yet again with the relationships between form and image structure. In so doing, Matisse creates a composition that irresistibly recalls the still lifes of Paul Cézanne. Matisse once said: "For several years, I thought that I would paint only still lifes. It was after having depicted still life objects that I was able to depict the human figure."
