1907, Félix Vallotton, Gertrude Stein -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York) (special exhibition)

From the Metropolitan Museum exhibition label: The American writer and art collector Gertrude Stein moved to Paris in 1903, where she hosted a regular salon at her home which was attended by leading figures in the art and literary worlds. Picasso had painted her portrait in 1905, and Vallotton rose to the challenge by producing his own version – which contains striking compositional similarities – a year later. Stein was intrigued by his painting process, which she recalled as “like pulling a curtain down and by the time he was at the bottom of the canvas, there you were”. She seems to have been unmoved by the result.
