1925, Piet Mondrian, Composition No. III -- Phillips Collection (Washington)

From the museum label: Writing to dealer Valentine Dudensing in 1946, Phillips expressed his desire to have this work at the museum: "It cast a sort of spell over me, and I became converted to an artist whose style I thought was too cold and austere for my taste ... I keep thinking about it ... I [want] to see if it continues to give me a strange sense of well being and satisfaction." He acquired it shortly thereafter for $4,000.
