1885, Edgar Degas, Visit to a Museum -- Museum of Fine Arts (Boston)

From the museum label: While Mary Cassatt and her sister Lydia originally posed for Degas's etchings of two women at the Louvre, the identity of the models in this late painting is far from secure. The figures surely derive from the earlier iterations, but they have morphed beyond recognition, moving the canvas from the realm of portraiture securely into that of genre painting, or a scene meant to evoke everyday life.
