1961, Frank Auerbach, Carreras Factory at Mornington Crescent -- Courtauld Gallery (London)
From the museum label: Auerbach has worked in North London around Mornington Crescent for most of his life. From the early 1960s this neighbourhood became a major subject of his art. For this view looking towards the former Carreras cigarette factory, Auerbach restricted his colours to black, white and shades of grey - a technique traditionally known as grisaille. With this limited palette, he created from this mundane street scene a work of haunting stillness, monumentality and grandeur.
