1937, Henri Matisse, Small Rumanian Blouse with Foliage -- Baltimore Museum of Art
From the Philadelphia exhibition label: Matisse was very taken with two types of cotton or lightweight linen peasant blouse then fashionable in the south of France. In a great many drawings and paintings, Matisse took pleasure in improvising on the blouses' embroidered linear floral and oak leaf patterns and in freely changing colors in a bold, concise style. The model for this picture was Hélène Galitzine, a Russian-born friend of Lydia Delectorskaya whom Matisse engaged to relieve Lydia of part of her modeling duties in 1936. Matisse also made variations on this motif with various other models until 1940.
