1923, Henri Matisse, Standing Odalisque Reflected in a Mirror -- Baltimore Museum of Art

From the museum label: Several prints, such as Odalisque in Striped Culottes, Reflected in a Mirror, are closely related to painted compositions but are not intended as reproductions. The print (which is in reverse orientation because of the printing process) is a variant approach and could have come before or after the painting. A comparison of details illustrates how print and painting use different means to accomplish equivalent goals. In the canvas, the color and the texture of decorative detail are essential to the compositional structure as well as to our reading of the spatial dimensions of the interior. Without the element of color, the drawing is able to include a more complex arrangement of window, shutters, and curtain in the background. Whereas, shadows are eliminated in the painting, considerable shading is used in the print to suggest space and model details such as the volume of the figure, the curtains in the back, and the leg of the mirror.
