1897, Camille Pissarro, Boulevard Montmartre, Spring Morning -- Courtauld Gallery (London)

From the museum label: Like many Impressionist artists, Pissarro was fascinated by the pace of urban life in Paris and the development of the city in the late 19th century. This view, painted from the window of a room at the Grand Hôtel de Russie, is one of fourteen depicting one of the longest avenues of Paris in different seasons and times of day. Pissarro enjoyed the bird's eye view of the busy street scene, rendered with short touches of colour. In contrast, he painted the sky in roader strokes of blue and white.
