1870, Honore Daumier, Don Quixote and Sancho Panza -- Courtauld Gallery (London)

From the museum label: In his lifetime, Daumier was particularly celebrated for his caricatures. This unfinished work is one of several paintings he made based on the Spanish novelist Cervantes' comedy of the knight Don Quixote. Daumier's painting preserves the humour and tragic nobility of the original story. Don Quixote's blind idealism is contrasted with Sancho Panza's common sense. Daumier has used the horse and donkey carrying Don Quixote and his servant to further express the differing characters of the two men.
