From the museum label: Following the reunification of Germany in 1990, twenty-eight paintings and drawings were handed over to France in 1994 and placed on the MNR list. These works had been given to a Wehrmacht soldier by a German officer stationed in Paris, at the end of the war, with the mission of taking them to Germany where the officer was to collect them. This having never manifested itself, the former soldier handed them over under the seal of confession to the archbishop of Magdeburg. The prelate entrusted them to the representative of the state museums of East Berlin in 1972. If research work since their return to France has made it possible to find two families of owners for seven pieces from this lot, the ownership of the Monet painting remains to be established. The painting having been part of the collection of François Depeaux until 1906, from which the impressionist collection of the Rouen museum came, it is temporarily deposited there.
