1644, Rembrandt van Rijn, The Woman Taken in Adultery -- National Gallery (London)
From the museum label: The Scribes and Pharisees, hoping to trap Jesus, bring the adulteress to him. They ask him whether the sentence of stoning her to death, required by the ancient law of the Hebrews, should be carried out. Christ replies, 'He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her' (John 8:7), thereby showing mercy without defying the law.
