1635, Rembrandt van Rijn, Saskia van Uylenburgh in Arcadian Costume -- National Gallery (London)

From the museum label: Rembrandt made this portrait of his wife in the year after their marriage. Saskia was the daughter of a wealthy mayor from the northern Netherlands. The artist shows her in the guise of a shepherdess or Flora, the Roman goddess of spring. This reflects the contemporary fashion in the arts for rustic themes. Saskia died when she was just 30 years old in 1642.
