From the museum label: On 12 August 1888, Vincent confided to his brother that he had begun work on "a little study of a fairground people's camp, red and green wagons". Since his arrival in Arles, he had been very enthusiastic about the multiplicity of subjects available to him as he explored the area. This small gypsy camp caught his attention due to its contrasting colours and the peaceful atmosphere conveyed by the scene.
