From the exhibition label: Unusual for his self-portraiture, Cézanne stands facing the viewer directly, his hands placed on the back of a chair. He based the likeness on a photograph, thus eliminating the need to turn his head to gaze into a mirror while painting, as he did for the two nearby self-portraits.
