1891, Paul Cezanne, The Smoker -- National Gallery of Art (Washington) (special exhibition)
From the exhibition label: Paulin Paulet, a gardener at the Cézanne family estate, appeared in several of the artist’s celebrated paintings of card players (seated at left in the painting reproduced here). In this portrait, he leans into a table that slants downwards, as if viewed from above. Such spatial ambiguities would leave a strong impression on modernist painters in the early twentieth century.
