Republic National Bank of New York was founded by Edmond Safra in 1966. Mr. Safra was a Lebanese-Brazilian Jewish banker. His holding company Republic New York Corp. also controlled Safra National Bank.
Edmond Safra tragically died in a fire in his own home in Monaco in 1999. Soon after his death, the parties who inherited Republic National Bank sold it to HSBC Bank USA for USD $9.8-billion. At the time, Republic National had over 80 branches in the New York City area, the third largest branch network in the metropolis.
