Rising blue smoke
The Auspicious Peace Garden, or 祥寧園 (Xiang Ning Yuan) in Chinese, is a cemetery where my maternal grandparents were buried.
Mother and I timed our trip to Hong Kong and China based on two factors: 1) my brother being off for Easter (HK still observes Easter now that it's part of China) and 2) the Ching Ming Festival.
The Ching Ming Festival is an ancient festival in China when people remember their ancestors and deceased friends/ family and visit the cemetery to tend to the graves.
The Chinese believe that burning incense sticks and (fake) paper money and offerings would allow the dead to use the offerings on "the other side." It's very polluting but it's ancient culture.
