Scientific research a must for proper water management | daily sun:

 

Policymakers and water experts on Wednesday made an 11-point recommendation for water resources management, including funding large-scale scientific researches to identify appropriate models of water management, reports BSS.

 

They made the recommendations at a convention of the ‘Outcome Presentation Ceremony of National Water Convention 16’ held at Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation (PKSF) auditorium here.

 

PKSF, Bangladesh Unnayan Parishad (BUP) and NGO Forum for Public Health jointly organized the convention.

 

Water Resources Minister Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud addressed the program as the chief guest with PKSF Chairman Dr. Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmed in the chair. ERD Secretary Kazi Shofiqul Azam addressed it, special guest. PKSF Managing Director Md Abdul Karim and NGO Forum for Public Forum Executive Director SMA Rashid, among others, addressed the program.

 

Mahmud said the government’s focus is now shifting towards river management as a part of comprehensive water resources management.

 

He stressed on turning the attention toward conservation of the water bodies as a crucial step to ensure effective management of the 80 percent of the water flow received within a short span of four months every year.

 

He urged the non-government organizations to work with the government to ensure safe drinking water.

 

The other recommendations of the convention include innovating feasible technology options, initiating and prioritizing public discourse on the burning water resources management issues, taking urgent actions for regional river management, moving to basin-wide approach for regional cooperation and implementing floodplain zoning for efficient flood management, improving water governance, promoting community-based conservation of natural forests, promoting rainwater harvesting, Applying Managed Aquifer Recharging technique in the Barind region and giving special attention to the impacts of arsenic on irrigation and food security.
