Starting the Climb

On a beautiful late winter morning in Altoona, a pair of pushers are already shoving hard on a westbound manifest beginning it's climb over the Allegheny mountains and the horseshoe curve. To the right is Alto tower, originally constructed in 1915, and retired from service in 2012. It still keeps guard over what is now known as "Altoona", watching endless trains glide down, or throttle up for their heavy pull over one of the most impressive shows in railroading. In previous trips, I had focused so much on other locations with signals, I never photographed here, and I'm so glad Alto was still standing, so I could get my very own shot here.
