UP X6937W, two DDA40Xs without the normal fast SD40-2 8000 series in the power consist, is moving through San Bernardino, CA on a very clear late winter afternoon on February 19, 1978. In the late 1970's UP between began to add a fast 8000 series SD40-2 unit to the normal consist of two DDA40Xs increasing the train power from 13,200 hp to 16,200. This was done to made sure UP fast freight trains could go 70 miles per hour.
