Not many people have heard about Savitribai Phule.. An Indian social reformer and poet, she played an important role in fighting for women's rights in India during the British rule and is often described as "one of the first-generation modern Indian feminists”. Savitribai Phule was married at the age of nine to thirteen-year-old Jyotirao Phule in 1840. In those days, women had no recognition in the society. Their needs and education was not considered important at all. Savitribai Phule, along with her husband, stood up to fight against the injustice done towards women. She organised a strike against barbers to stop them from shaving the heads of widows (as was customary at the time) and set up a care center for pregnant rape victims to deliver their children. Phule also worked to abolish discrimination and unfair treatment of people based on their castes and genders and opened a well in her house so that the untouchables, who were refused drinking water by the upper caste, could drink from it. Savitribai Phule was the first woman teacher in India and opened the first all-girls school in Pune, along with her husband. Together, they taught children from different castes and opened a total of 18 schools! Phule wrote many poems against discrimination and advised people to get educated. She devoted her entire life to the welfare of people, women and children. And, although she faced a lot of opposition from society, she did not stop. She died taking care of patients suffering from the worldwide bubonic plague. She’s definitely a woman every man, woman and child should look up to!
Moral: If you believe that something is happening wrong, fight to make it right.
