18933 Private John Robert Brown, 7th. Battalion, Suffolk Regiment.

Born in Creeting St. Mary, Suffolk, the so of William and Lydia Mary Brown, nee Chittock.

John married Edith Lydia Stearn in the Stowmarket district of Suffolk in October 1913.

Enlisted at Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, and served in France and Flanders from 15th. December 1915.

John was killed in action on Saturday 28th. April 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on Bay 4 of the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.

Also remembered on the Creeting St. Mary war memorial.

 

18932 Private George Carter, 2nd. Battalion, Suffolk Regiment.

The son of James and Kate Carter of Lea Lane, Great Ashfield.

George died, aged 26, on Monday 13th. November 1916. He is buried in Grave: 21 at Luke Copse British Cemetery, originally known as V Corps Cemetery No. 19, at Puisieux, Pas de Calais, France with the personal inscription,

'YEARS ARE PASSING

AND STILL WE MISS HIM

G/12327 Private Arthur Ernest Hawes, 1st. Battalion, The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment).

Arthur was killed in action on Sunday 3rd. September 1916. He has no known grave and is commemorated on Pier and Face 5 D and 6 D of the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, Picardie, France.

 

320910 Private George William Hawes, 15th. Battalion, Suffolk Regiment.

The son of Arthur and Angelina Hawes of Great Ashfield.

George died, aged 20, on Sunday 14th. July 1918. He is buried in Grave: IV. B. 16 at St. Venant-Robecq Road British Cemetery, Rebecq, Pas de Calais, France.

 

25093 Private Arthur J. Scase, 'D' Company, 7th. Battalion, Suffolk Regiment.

Born in Great Ashfield in 1897, the son of Peter and Ellen Scase, nee Avis, of Elmswell Road, Great Ashfield.

Arthur died of wounds, aged 19, on Wednesday 11th. October 1916. He is buried in Grave: II. D. 52 at Dartmoor Cemetery, Becordel-Becourt, Somme, Picardie. France.

 

14644 Private Cyril Walter Scase MM, 2nd Battalion, Suffolk Regiment.

Born in Great Ashfield c. 1890, the son of Arthur David and Julia Scase, nee Largent, of Great Ashfield.

Cyril was killed in action, aged 28, on Thursday 28th. March 1918. He has no known grave and is commemorated on Bay 4 of the Arras Memorial, Pas de Calais, France.

 

16207 Private Leslie Arthur John Walpole, 8th. Battalion, Suffolk Regiment.

The son of Mrs. E. Howard of Kiln Farm, Great Ashfield.

Leslie died on Thursday 28th. November 1915. He is buried in Grave: I. C. 10 at Albert Communal Cemetery, Extension, Somme, Picardie, France with the personal inscription,

'HE HATH FOUGHT

41058 Serjeant Arthur William Wyatt, 8th. Battalion, Suffolk Regiment.

Arthur was killed inaction on Tuesday 6th. March 1917. He has no known grave and is commemorated on Pier and Face 1 C and 2 A of the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, Picardie, France.

39761 Private Arthur Edward Boughton, 6th.Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment.

Born in 1893 at Ashfield Magna, the son of Harry, a wheelwright, and Hannah Boughton, nee Pryke of Long Thurlow Road, Badwell Ash, Suffolk.

The 1901 census records Arthur living at Daisy Green, Ashfield Magna with his father, now a carpenter, his mother, sister Olive G. aged 9; and brothers William G. aged 4 and Herbert F. aged 1. All the children were born in Ashfield Magna.

The 1911 census records Arthur as having no occupation, and living at Great Ashfield with his parents, brothers and a new sister Annie aged 8, born in Great Ashfield.

Arthur enlisted at Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk.

Arthur was killed in action during the Battle of Broodseinde, aged 25, on Sunday 7th. October 1917. The Regimental diary records,

'7 Oct 1917 Heavy artillery bombarded the GERMAN front line throughout the day with success. Our front line coys pushed forward patrols to ascertain if the ENEMY was still holding his same position. He was! Inter-coy relief took place between D & A coys - 'B' would have relieved 'C' coy but got badly shelled and was unable to do so. 10 O.R's killed 15 O.R's wounded.'

Arthur is buried in Grave: V. A. 2 at Larch Wood (Railway Cutting) Cemetery, Zillebeke, West Flanders, Belgium with the personal inscription,

'SAFE IN THE ARMS OF JESUS'

 

43286 Private Frederick McLellan, 1st. Battalion, West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own).

The son of George and Phoebe McLellan of The Glebe House, Great Ashfield.

Native of Gateshead.

Frederick died, aged 30, on Friday 1st. June 1917. He is buried in Grave: V. D. 33 at Lillers Communal Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.

 

98676 Shoeing Smith Ernest Redit, 17th. Divisional Ammunition Column, Royal Field Artillery.

Born in 1888 at Great Ashfield, the son of Walter Nathaniel, a blacksmith, and Jane Francis Redit, nee Eslick, of The Forge, Great Ashfield.

The 1891 census was living at Badwell Green, Suffolk with his parents, sisters Lettie aged 13 and Florence aged 7, and brothers Bertie aged 9, George aged 6 and Arthur aged 4. All the children were recorded as born in Badwell Ash.

The 1901 census records the family at the same address, with Ernest listed as a domestic gardener.

Ernest is not identified in the 1911 census, but his parents were recorded as living at The Green, Badwell Ash.

At Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk in the 2nd. quarter of 1911 Ernest married Amelia Mary Last from Great Barton.

Ernest was especially enlisted at Braintree, Essex as a shoeing smith.

Ernest died of pneumonia, aged 30, on Wednesday 30th. October 1918. He is buried in Grave: LXXI. E. 23 at Etaples Military Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.

His widow's addresses after his death were either 'Langmarche', Rayne Road, Braintree, or 49 Wheatley Avenue, Braintree.

 

2268 Private Reginald Smith, 59th. Battalion, Australian Infantry, Australian Imperial Force..

Born in 1890 at Bungay, Suffolk.

The ward of Mr. William Kent of Daisy Green, Great Ashfield. The AIF lists this man as Reginald's next of kin, living at Hollersley, Suffolk.

Reginald was schooled at Witheringsett, Suffolk.

After emigrating to Australia Reginald lived in Carlton, Melbourne, Victoria, where his occupation was as a labourer.

Reginald enlisted into the Depot Battalion, AIF, on 6th July 1915.

On 27th. September 1915, with the embarkation roll number 13, Reginald boarded the troopship HMAT Hororata (A20) at Melbourne as part of the 21st. Infantry Battalion. Upon arriving in France he was transferred to the 59th. Infantry Battalion,

Reginald was killed in action at thenBattle of Fromelles, aged 27, on Wednesday 19th. July 1916. He is buried in Grave: VI. D. 42 at Ration Farm Military Cemetery, la Chapelle-d'Armentieres, Nord, France.
