Henry Grenville Howard was born on 25th. June 1877, the son of Hon. Greville Theophilus Howard, a barrister from 1836 to 1880, and the son of Charles John Howard, 17th. Earl of Suffolk and Isabella Catherine Howard, and Lady Audrey Jane Charlotte Townshend, the daughter of Rear-Admiral John Townshend, 4th. Marquess Townshend of Raynham and Elizabeth Jane Stuart.

 

Henry was the brother of,

 

Dorothy Elizabeth Howard, b. 1st. March 1875, d. 2nd. September 1952.

 

Joyce Ethelreda Howard, b. 11th. May 1876, d. 5th. October 1961.

 

Sir Charles Alfred Howard, b. 29th. July 1878, d. 5th. January 1958.

He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire and the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Berkshire.

He fought in the Boer War between 1900 and 1901. He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the King's Royal Rifle Corps, and fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in dispatches and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in 1917 and bar in 1918.

He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant of Norfolk, the office of Deputy Constable of Dover Castle between 1932 and 1935, and the office of Serjeant-at-Arms, House of Commons between 1935 and 1956.

He was appointed Knight Commander, Royal Victorian Order in 1944 and was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Royal Victorian Order in 1956.

 

Henry's battalion, the 2nd. Battalion, King's Royal Rifles served in India from 1898 to 1899.

 

Henry was unmarried and died at Calcutta, aged 22, on Friday 21st. July 1899.

 

 

This brass plaque, erected by his brother officers, is on the south wall of the transept in St. Lawrence's church at Castle Rising, Norfolk.
