Bangladesh celebrated International Mother Language Day on 21 February placing garlands at the Shaheed Minar, or the Martyr's monument, at the Dhaka University Campus. First commemorated as Language Martyrs’ Day it is a day of remembrance reserved for the young men who were killed in 1952 when police opened fire at a student’s campaign to establish Bangla as the language of the then East Pakistan.
