Tashkent. Uzbekistan
Barakhan madrasah, built in 1523 when Tashkent was culturally flourishing.
A madrasah was an Islamic school where students could learn about the Quran and other Islamic texts and law, as well as secular subjects such as mathematics, astronomy, medicine and other subjects.
The madrasah is one of the few, authentically preserved historical monuments of the fragmented old town of Tashkent. Much of Tashkent's old town has been bulldozed for modern buildings, big roads and megaprojects.
The complex surrounding the madrasah houses a large, 8th century Quran, one of the oldest preserved Quran's in the world. It was brought to Samarkand by Amir Timur after his brutal conquests in Iran and Iraq (late 14th century).
