Remnants of a forgotten Byzantine past. Trabzon, Turkey.

St. Anna church.

Ancient Byzantine church from the 9th century with reused ancient materials dating back to the rule of emperor Basilios I. Its frescoes are from between the 13th to 15th century, during the time of the "Empire of Trebizond". Especially notable are the frescoes of elite officials from the then imperial court, with stately portraits showing off their luxurious oriental clothing. The church has been renovated in recent years, recovering its frescoes.

Trabzon (Trebizond or Trapezounda) was an important, independent Byzantine capital of the so called Empire of Trebizond (1204-1461), in the eastern Pontic Alps of north-eastern Turkey, at the Black Sea. It flourished due to its important trade location as a crossroad of the Silk Roads.
