On a very hot and humid Sunday 30th June 1968, courtesy of BR(WR), I again part-surveyed the former Forest of Dean Branch between Bullo Pill dock and Cinderford, which had been officially closed on Thursday 9th November 1967. Approaching the east portal of the 1064-yard Bullo (or Haie Hill) tunnel, I was met with a very chilled air current emanating from the bore as the cold air condensed on meeting the ambient very warm air. It was thus not possible to see the far end of the bore due to this 'cloud'. The still photo taken at 15:19 cannot reveal what was happening but the eerie vapour cloud was swirling gently to and fro and it reminded me of the apparition seen in BBC TV rendition of Charles Dickens's "The Signalman" starring Denholm Elliott and shot at the west portal of Bewdley tunnel on the Severn Valley Railway.
