General view of single line at west portal of 239-yard Penar tunnel (official railway spelling) on the former Halls Road branch. The line was closed completely in 1989 following the last coal traffic from Oakdale Colliery and the track lifted north of Crosskeys shortly afterwards. The essential telegraph link between Penar and Lime Kiln Junctions is seen to terminate here and then was cabled through the tunnel bore and was re-established to its aerial pole route beyond the far portal. This photo was recorded courtesy of BR(WR) at 11:59 on 11th June 1967.
