Daydreaming (Explored)
A Thirteen-Lined Ground Squirrel (striped gopher), one of many that live underground in my back yard. Average length is approximately 11 inches, including the 4" long black-striped tail. Males and females weigh from five to nine ounces, respectively. These squirrels usually hibernate from October to March. Their body temperatures drop to just above freezing and their heart rate drops to as low as 20 beats per minute from their usual 200. During hibernation, they can lose up to 1/3 of their body weight.
