Dark Day Lily (Explored)
I wish I knew the name of this day lily, but I don't. I bought it at a day lily farm (yes, there are day lily farms) in Byron Center, Michigan 25 years ago. I lived in a different city back then and had no idea I would eventually leave that charming little bungalow with it's lovely garden. But the commute to my work at a university lead me to West Michigan. I cut a small bit of the day lily roots and transplanted it in my new-to-me-yard. That yard became gardens and this day lily has a featured spot. I love it. I managed to get this image, the next to the last bloom this day lily will make this year, before it ran out of buds. The flowers last just one day. I shot this image using a light box that has a hole in the top. I tipped a $5 desk lamp on its side and shined it so I could pick up the light edges on the petals and sepals and that intense glow from the throat.
