Bundle Up

Winter is my favorite time to take out my camera. Sure, some days the world around you is a stale husk of its usual self, but sprinkle in some snow and sun, and even flat scenes can become dynamic paintings.

That was the case on this day, as a mundane cloudy winter morning in March gave way to a windy nightmare for a man standing outside. Thankfully for me, the sun came out only when I needed it to be present to add glint to my photos. Chasing a train directly away from the sun usually provides horrible pictures, but low light and blowing snow made this one entirely better than it would have been had the conditions stayed the same from day break.

Three RS18s team up in this photo to take a whopping 3 cement loads westward along the SFG mainline to Matapedia. About to cross Route du Parc de la Gaspésie, the train will cross two bridges right after in the town of Cascapedia, and the sun would duck away moments after they cleared.

Unfortunately for guys like me, the arrival of leaser GP38s has shunned the RS18s to that status of backup power. I'm glad I spent so much time up here when I could.
