The Constitution refit of the early 2270s exceeded the Dreadnought’s capabilities in almost every way, rendering the design quickly obsolete. In addition, the Constitution heavy cruiser was a front-line vessel, while the dreadnoughts were generally kept in reserve at Starbases and saw little real action. For these reasons it was rare to see a dreadnought, while the Ptolemy, Hermes, and Saladin classes were widely used throughout the 2260s and 2270s. But even these were phased out with the introduction of newer classes such as the Miranda, Constellation, and Sydney.
