Soft Rush

Another wetland species, Juncus effusus is commonly found in moist, disturbed soils and along stream banks. The spike rising above the inflorescence is the only characteristic I know of on this plant, but it is distinctive when lacking any other prominent features such as additional leaves or bracts. It is a clumping plant, and the flowers come up on bare stalks. Juncaceae. Carroll Co, MD. Winfield Quad.
