Karakallou

The Holy Monastery of Karakallou is one of the twenty monasteries on Mount Athos, Greece, and ranks 11th in the Athonite hierarchy. It is located on the southeastern side of the Athos peninsula, between the monasteries of Great Lavra and Iviron.

Founded in the 11th century, the monastery was named after its founder, possibly a monk named Karakalas. Over the centuries, it has suffered pirate attacks, destruction, and rebuilding. The monastery follows the coenobitic monastic tradition, meaning that the monks live communally, sharing everything.
