Utah Sandstone Cliffs

With sandstone cliffs in the background, Union Pacific C-IPWE (coal empties from Lynndyl, UT to West Elk Mine, CO) races east through Thompson Springs, Utah on the Green River Subdivision, running parallel with old U.S. 50 and Interstate-70 across the desolate Colorado Plateau desert.

Through red rocks and snowcapped mountains, the Green River Subdivision is the former Denver & Rio Grande Western mainline from Denver to Salt Lake City, part of the D&RGW standard gauge network across Colorado and Utah. The mainline parallels Interstate-70 and the Book Cliffs across the Colorado Plateau.

Along with mainline freight traffic, the Green River Subdivision sees Amtrak's daily California Zephyr between Chicago and Oakland, and also sees the world-famous Rocky Mountaineer between Denver and Moab. The Rocky Mountaineer operates luxury passenger excursions on three mainlines through the Canadian Rockies, and over this route to Moab, known as "Rockies to the Red Rocks."
