Fall Excursion - 1986

Back before the NSSR began operation, LS&M was the only show in town and it wasn't uncommon to have all trains sold-out on nice fall weekends. Here engine 46, still wearing its tired Flambeau Paper colors, heads under the DM&IR's Interstate Branch and Highway 39. The crossing 46 is rolling over was for loaded trucks to use as a bypass for the weight-restricted highway bridge, which would be torn down soon after this with the grade crossing becoming the main highway crossing (as it is today). Carl Ekholm (left), Mark Olson, and Gordon Hanson ride the front of the diminutive engine.
