The House of Love and War
The Waite Building was constructed in 1893. It housed the Fair department store on the ground floor, along with offices upstairs— including attorneys, accountants and the Colfax Commoner newspaper.
The building was remodeled in 1916 and sometime in the 1920s, the Waite Block was purchased by Linville Brothers Furniture, who opened a passageway between this building and the Ellis building next door. During the 50s or 60s the entire facade of the building was sheathed in aluminum siding— covering all of the upper windows.
The building continued to house furniture stores (most recently Hunter's Furniture) into the 2000s. In the early 21st century, the aluminum facade was removed, returning the building to it's 1916 state.
