Spoofage
I made this fine spoofage for the upcoming Poverty Olympics street
theatre action.
One of the organizers brought in this very classy magazine ad praising
all the Olympics' corporate sponsors, with a quote from IOC President
Jaques Rogge: “Until they are fed, housed, and trained, our athletes
can’t skate, ski, or slide. 365 days a year, our worldwide corporate
partners make the dreams of the Olympic athlete a reality. For that,
we, and everyone who loves the Olympic games, owe them our deepest
gratitude.”
That Jacques Rogge, what a class act! He was an Olympic athlete
himself once you know ... yacht racing.
Well, we in Vancouver also know a little about needing to be fed and
housed. So with that in mind I asked my funny neighbour Muriel to
play around in an alley in costume, took a bunch of pics, and added
this text: "Until they are properly fed and housed, low income people
in our neighbourhood and the world can't work or get healthy or even
participate in their community. 365 days a year, Olympic corporate
sponsors squander money that governments could use to reduce poverty
and homelessness. For that, we and everyone who is getting screwed by
the Olympics, owe them nothing."
Oh yes, originally the word "screwed" was in there ... but another of
the organizers took exception to it so I substituted "ripped off".
