Strawberry Tree (Arbutus unedo)
Strawberry Tree (Arbutus unedo) Rohini Street, Turramurra beside the railway entrance in Sydney. The house known as "Rohini" was situated at the bottom of the street, named by the Indian born diplomat Henry Braddon.
He seems to have owned another house with the same name at Edgecliff. Sir Henry Braddon was also an international rugby player, politician and businessman.
Rohini is an Indian word meaning "a place of beauty, where the great buddha lived". This plant is not a native to Australia, but an ornamental plant with attractive flowers and edible fruit.
When a child, I sung in class "My love's an arbutus". A setting of the poem by Alfred Graves. Strongly disliked it at the time, the words seemed stupid when a ten year old. Now, nothing much has changed. Still dislike it.
The plant is much better than the song!
